When We Dance, Short Film, Review And Interview

To get a real feeling for what When We Dance is all about, read what inspired Director Charlie Piper to make the film. There is little I would be able to add to what he says. The part I will add is the actor Larry Cedar was nominated for Best Actor for the work he does in this emotional piece.
When We Dance was screened at the 2019 FilmQuest film festival (website) it was nominated for Best Actor (Larry Cedar) and Best Score.
Synopsis: On the night of his wife's funeral, a widower finds an old record of the song that was playing the night they first met. He plays the song and her ghost returns to him for a brief moment, causing him to question everything he believes in.
Charlie Pieper shared his inspiration for When We Dance along with his personal inspirations and what he is looking forward to.
What was the inspiration for When We Dance?
So last year I was at FilmQuest with my short horror film Malacostraca. While at the festival I met writer Kenny Wright and we hit it off. Afterwards he sent me a few of his scripts to consider and I just totally dug When We Dance. I'd never directed an emotional, bittersweet (well, tragic really) romance like this before. So, I thought it would be a fun directorial challenge and make for an unexpected and wildly different follow-up from my last short!
What project(s) do you have coming up you're excited about?
Malacostraca (My short from last year) will premiere online on Director's Notes in late November and then shortly thereafter be on the online horror channel Alter! On top of that short finally seeing the light of internet day so to say I am developing two new horror feature scripts. One is small in scope and one is rather large in scope! Both of which I hope to direct in the near future before all society collapses and the world burns.
What was your early inspiration for pursuing a career in film?
My parents were both theatre people, so I grew up in and around a creative atmosphere. Yet from an early age I veered slightly off that stage-bound course and became interested in film. My parents would often joke about this, i.e., 'Where did we go wrong? Our son wants to be behind the camera and not in front of it?'
What would be your dream project?
I've already written it. It is a feature drama/supernatural comedy of sorts called The Mongoose Vanishes! based off the 'true story' of Gef the talking mongoose spirit from the Isle of Man in the 1930s. Google 'Gef the mongoose' and prepare to be baffled!
What are some of your favorite pastimes when not working on a movie?
Being stressed out quietly while sitting in air-conditioned darkness.
What is one of your favorite movies and why?
My all-time favorite film is The Night of the Hunter and that's just because I have impeccable taste you see.
